Aircond sizing and installation for the Klang Valley.

BTU sizing for KL heat, the inverter trade-off in real terms, copper vs aluminium piping, and the eight install details that determine whether your unit lasts five years or fifteen.

An aircon unit in the Klang Valley climate works harder than the same unit in Penang, Singapore, or Bangkok. Higher daytime humidity, sustained 30°C overnight temperatures during dry season, and a typical KL condo orientation that puts at least one bedroom directly in the path of afternoon western sun — all of it stacks the load. The decisions you make at sizing and install time are what determine whether your unit copes for fifteen years or starts shedding capacity by year six.

This is the brief we'd run if we were specifying aircon for a new launch unit or an existing home anywhere in KL or Selangor.

1. BTU sizing — the actual maths

The lazy version of sizing — "RM 1 per square foot, just multiply your room" — gets people wrong about a third of the time. The right version factors room area, ceiling height, sun exposure, and occupancy. For a Klang Valley climate, here's a practical starting framework. Use it as a sense check on whatever your installer quotes.

Add capacity if your ceiling is over 3m, if the room has a glass balcony door, or if it's regularly occupied by more than two adults. Don't undersize. An undersized unit runs constantly, never reaches setpoint, and burns out the compressor years early.

2. Inverter vs non-inverter — when the payback works

Inverter units modulate compressor speed instead of cycling on/off. They cost RM 600–1,200 more per unit at point of purchase and deliver roughly 30% lower running cost when used more than three hours per day. The maths is straightforward:

The one place inverters don't make sense: guest bedrooms, holiday units, and pool-side gazebos where the unit might sit idle for weeks at a time. Sealed inverter compressors don't love sitting unused; conventional ones tolerate it better.

3. Brand selection in 2026

Three tiers in the Malaysian market right now, with the price ladder roughly:

Whichever brand: insist on a unit manufactured within the current calendar year. Stock that's sat in a distributor's warehouse for 18 months has refrigerant that's been quietly leaking through factory schrader valves; you don't want it.

4. Copper vs aluminium piping

The cheap install package that retailers push includes aluminium piping. Aluminium is half the price of copper. It also corrodes faster, can't tolerate as many bend cycles, and is harder to repair cleanly in 8 years' time when you need to replace the indoor unit.

Insist on copper piping, ideally Insulflex-jacketed, with the wall hole filled and sealed properly. The cost difference for a typical 1.5 HP install is RM 80–150. It's the highest-ROI line item in the entire install.

5. The eight install details that decide lifespan

Watch for these on install day. A good installer does all eight without prompting. A bad one cuts corners on at least four.

  1. Vacuum pump used for at least 20 minutes before refrigerant is released into the line. Skipping this leaves moisture in the system — kills compressors.
  2. Piping bends made with a tube bender, not by hand. Hand bends kink the inner wall and cause refrigerant flow restriction.
  3. Drainage line has a positive gradient sloping away from the indoor unit. Test by pouring a cup of water into the indoor tray — water should drain within 10 seconds.
  4. Outdoor condenser unit has 30cm clear airspace on all sides. Tucked into a tight enclosure = capacity loss and short compressor life.
  5. Wall mounting bracket is anchored into solid brick/concrete, not into hollow plasterboard or render. Test by gently rocking — should not move.
  6. Flare nuts torqued, not just hand-tightened. Loose flares are the most common cause of refrigerant leaks in year 2–3.
  7. Insulation sleeve wraps the entire pipe run, not just visible sections. Bare copper in an attic = condensation = water damage.
  8. System is run on both heating and cooling mode for 15 minutes before the installer leaves. Reveals leaks and faulty sensors immediately.
